5/04/10 > HOLA AMIGOS teachers will expand to BMES and DSES
Maestra Maria and Marilu will spend part of their time teaching at BMES and DSES as well as at DWES. With their K-5 curriculum rolled out, they are ready to expand and allow other Cave Creek district students the opportunity to participate in a proficiency-oriented Spanish program that gets results!
4/28/10 > PK-2nd graders perform on stage... in Spanish!
A successful Pk-2nd grade performance took place tonight on the Desert Willow Stage. The story line revolved around "Excellent Ecosystems... en EspaƱol" with each class taking one ecosystem that they studied during the year. Teachers and students outdid themselves .... AGAIN! Thanks to parents for all of their support!
2/15/10 > Potential closure of Desert Arroyo Middle School

Stay tuned as the district decides whether to close a school to save funds or keep it open. This closure would affect DWES by bringing the 6th grade back down to the elementary. A new model would need to be developed for that and is already underway. 7th and 8th graders would all go to Sonoran Trails Middle School so the immersion program would move there as well. Changes in program model are anticipated as well.

11/19/09 > Grant pays for teachers to attend the ACTFL conference
The Spanish side of the immersion team teachers, principal Roger Hill and myself (Cristina Marchica-Ladas) attended the ACTFL conference (American Council for Teachers of Foreign Languages) this weekend. We learned so much---and all related to language learning... can't wait to implement and share!
11/03/09 > Report has been submitted to Washington DC
Glad to report that the 2nd Annual Data Report has been submitted as required by the FLAP Grant.

9/30/09 > The Hola Amigos Spanish Program at DWES
The "Hola Amigos" program at DWES is up and running for its 3rd year in a row, thanks to the FLAP grant. Each year, we have rolled up 2 new grade levels and are proud to announce that we are a complete K-5 strand as of today. This program is available to students not participating in the immersion strand. Students see our amazing Spanish teachers (Maestra Maria & Marilu) 1-2 times a week for 30 minute classes completely taught in Spanish using immersion methods.
9/08/09 > Middle School Update
Currently the 6th graders are taking their Social Studies core content class in Spanish and an Honors Spanish class as their elective. The Honors Spanish class will begin to focus on more grammar and refinement of reading and writing and will be taught exclusively in Spanish. The grant has purchased parallel materials for the Social Studies class in Spanish and has helped design the curriculum for the Honors Spanish class.
9/07/09 > Spanish Library Books
The grant has purchased $8,000 of Spanish library books. Encourage your kiddos to check them out!
4/22/09 > 1st Inaugural International Teacher Summit
The state department has been putting more energies into their International Schools division and will be launching its first summit on May 1st. Several teachers from immersion (both English and Spanish), Mr. Hill, Dr. Miller and immersion middle school teachers (along with their principal Ms. Orlando) will also attend. As leaders in this movement, we hope to shape the direction of AZ when it comes to International Education.
3/15/09 > End of Year Shows
Desert Willow will be hosting three language performances this Spring.

PreK-2nd grade immersion: May 5 (evening)
Grades 3-5 immersion: May 19 (evening)
The AMIGOS program: May 6 (daytime)

These shows allow us to meet several of the foreign language standards, especially the ones that focus on presentational skills in a second language. Thanks for your support!
12/08/08 > Golden Bell Awarded to our Foreign Language Programs
Our foreign language programs have been awarded the distinguished Golden Bell award by the AZ Public School Board Association! We'll add that to our A+ Exemplary Program Award from last year!
11/24/08 > Grant pays for immersion teachers to go to national conference
The FLAP grant we have paid for K-4th grade Spanish side immersion teachers to attend the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Conference in Florida this past week. We came across several programs very similar to ours and listened to more of a nation-wide perspective of foreign language learning.
10/05/08 > Spanish Classes for K-3 grade NON-immersion students
We are glad to report that our Spanish Classes for K-3 non-immersion students are up and running. We have Special Needs students attending with their inclusion classes as well. The K-1 classes are taught by Maestra Marilu for 30 minutes, 3 times a week. The 2-3rd grade classes are taught by Maestra Maria. 2nd grade receives class 30 min. 3 times a week while 3rd grade receives Spanish twice a week for 30 minutes.
9/08/08 > Science materials in Spanish
The FLAP grant has paid for $14,000 worth of Spanish Science materials: A Scott Forseman/Pearson program called "Ciencias." The program was checked for AZ Standards alignment and mapped out as a curriculum for full implementation this year.
8/11/08 > Bienvenidos al 2008-09
Glad you are all back. We have filled all open positions with a few changes. Please welcome new immersion teachers Sr. Brooks at first grade and Sra. Stevens at fifth. The grant is funding a kinder teacher aide for Sra. Smith so please welcome Sra. Angelica when you see her on campus. You'll still find Maria, Marilu and I in the back of the library but our Spanish FLES classes will be taught in room 120 upstairs! Nos vemos!
4/15/08 > Oral Proficiency Testing for Immersion students begins
One on one interviews with immersion students will take place until the end of the year. The interview will actually help measure that student's level of oral Spanish proficiency by assigning a language level and label. This information will be kept in a database and used for grant reporting as well as for feedback on how our own students are doing.
4/09/08 > Spanish Immersion Kinder Position Posted
The position has been posted on the district website and interviews have been scheduled for April 17th. This position will be entirely funded by the grant for the 2008-09 school year.
4/01/08 > You are invited to our A+ Exemplary Programs Award Ceremony
Please join us on Thurs. April 3, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. as DWES celebrates and officially receives their A+ Award for its Exemplary Foreign Language Programs from the AZ Education Foundation. All foreign language program classrooms will perform and students will relate the history of these programs. All staff, students, community members and parents are invited to attend.
3/04/08 > Dr. Tara Fortune, International Consultant Visits
Dr. Tara Fortune, Director of the Center for Applied Research in Language Acquisition ( CARLA ) from the University of Minnesota came through a partnership established with our FLAP grant funds. She observed our immersion and FLEX programs on Monday and delivered a workshop to immersion and FLEX teachers and our administration based on her observations. Her recommendations were invaluable and we look forward to having her out again next year.
2/29/08 > Middle School Immersion Unveiled

Notes from the "Moving Immersion to the Middle" Meeting (2/28/08)

The meeting at DAMS last night was well attended and cemented the needed support for immersion to continue. Dr. Burdick, Dr. Frison from district administration were there. Dr. Miller, Ann Orlando (DAMS principal), Erik Francis (DAMS assistant principal), Monica Milinovich (Director of English Learner Programs) and myself were involved in presenting and have been the ones working behind the scenes.

Basically, there are currently 2 plans on the table. Plan A is contingent on possible funding coming in from the state (Monica is monitoring this).

Plan A would allow the DWES immersion model to essentially continue as is for one additional year at DAMS with students receiving 2 content areas (2  70 min. blocks) in Spanish (math and science are targetted) and 2 content areas in English (English and social studies are targetted). The students would remain together and would not mix with other middle school students except for their electives. The targetted areas would be determined by the newly hired teacher's areas of competence. This teacher would have an ESL/bilingual endorsement as well as endorsements to teach their content areas.

Plan B would go into place if the funding mentioned above didn't come through. The program would still continue in 6th grade. Immersion students would be mixed with other middle school students and would come together for one Advanced Spanish class (only 1 70 min. block) taught by the current Spanish teachers at DAMS. This class would be offered DAILY and would occur during the elective time which would mean that these students would have to choose to do Spanish as their elective all year. Similar to Band students choosing to do Band as their elective all year long.

Both plans change for 7th and 8th grade. Immersion students will be mixed with other middle school students except for an every other day Adcvanced Spanish class (1  70 min. block every other day) which would become one of their two electives. They would still be able to pick a second elective which would alternate days with Advanced Spanish.

We are pushing for as much Spanish as possible as the research shows us what happens when that second language isn't practiced regularly.

Parents at the meeting had lots of questions and feedback for us which we are digesting. We are doing our best to put together a program that will put these students on track to take their AP Spanish course freshman year (our goal) and to consider joining the IB program during the later high school years. Please send me any questions, suggestions, stop by my office (back of DWES library), email or call me 480-650-5237. We encouraged parents to take 2 weeks to digest the informaiton (while we hopefully wait for funding) and will very likely call a second meeting to finalize programming and answer any other questions. We appreciate all the support from this parent group as they help mold the future of the CCUSD Spanish immersion program.

I've attached Plan A and Plan B in pdf form.

2/12/08 > Curriculum Mapping for Immersion

The grant helped bring Dr. McBiles to DWES for a day of curriculum mapping. The immersion teachers (English and Spanish) participated in the workshop as well as the preschool immersion and FLEX teachers. Curriculum maps are valuable planning tools for teachers, helping them to begin with the end in mind and chart a course for the year. Typically, annual curriculum maps are organized by month or marking period and provide an overview of:

  • enduring understandings and overarching goals
  • the standards-based essential skills and concepts
  • the methods of assessment that the teacher and students will be working on throughout the year (e.g., major writing assignments, projects, performances)
  • the major content resources

The immersion teachers have found this planning to be valuable and necessary and will be continuing on their own and during extra work days supported by the grant.

2/08/08 > A+ Exemplary Program Award: DWES Foreign Language Programs
Dear Families and Friends,

Congratulations!

Desert Willow was informed yesterday that we are the recipient of an A+ Exemplary Programs designation by the Arizona Education Foundation for the Spanish Immersion Program. The programs submitted fell under the foreign language umbrella... the full immersion preschool, partial immersion elementary and Foreign Language Exposure (FLEX) program at K-1.
1/30/08 > Middle School Update (new)

Just got out of a very productive meeting at Desert Arroyo. We are all on the same page and continuing to move forward on the specifics of the design of the middle school immersion program. My vision continues to be for the immersion students to take their AP class in Spanish as soon as possible once they hit high school in order to secure that college credit early on. I'm working hard to make that happen. So, while I still can't give you the specifics of the middle school model, what the schedule will look like, etc. I hope you are secure in what I've taken upon myself to get done. The program is a complete go at Desert Arroyo and it is proving to be an exciting and creative transition. We even talked today about getting me a little office space at DAMS so I can deicate some of my time to supporting the transition next year and go between DWES and DAMS.

We have one more internal meeting on Feb. 11 to nail down these specifics (have you ever looked at a middle school schedule?) and then will be holding a meeting at Desert Arroyo for parents on Feb. 21 from 5-6. Hope to see you there. The bus is moving, albeit a little slow for some of you...however, I again want to thank those of you who have put their trust in me to do what's in the best interest of our kids and this very amazing program! ¡Adenlante!

1/28/08 > Middle School Update
I (Cristina Marchica) and Monica Milenovich met last week to discuss what the middle school model will look like. We are taking that information to a larger group on Wed. 1/30/08. We will have DWES and DAMS principals, district level curriculum and ELL directors as well as myself. We are looking at transporation support for those STMS families. One myth I'd like to dispel is that the immersion students will be mixed in with the ELL (English Language Learners). By law, ELL students cannot receive content instruction in Spanish until they are reclassified as fluent English speakers. The idea is however, to share the teacher that will see the ELL students with the immersion students. This ELL teacher would need to be dually certified (like myself) , meaning they would have an ELL certification (which means they understand second language acquisition) as well as certification in a content area (science, social studies and/or math). I'll post more information after tomorrow's meeting. Once we have finalized our plans, we are looking forward to sharing it with all of you. Thanks for your patience. --CM
1/11/08 > What's new this year so far...

New AR in Spanish : A new AR online system with Spanish titles. I'll look into how to get that up and running.

Middle School : Programming meetings scheduled for early next week.

A+ Exemplary Schools Site Visit : We were informed that we have made it to the site visit level of the competition. The AZ Education Foundation will visit our foreign language programs in February.

Science Materials are in : Since we don't have a specified Spanish Language Arts Block, the immersion teachers teach Spanish literacy through their Science, Social Studies and Math. The grant purchased big books and little class sets of science related books in Spanish.

National K-12 Suvery: I filled out a survey for the Center for Applied Linguisitics that will generate a national report on foreign langauge programming in our schools.

12/20/07 > Open Enrollment Forms for 5th grade students

The immersio program will continue at Desert Arroyo Middle School only. If you are slotted for Sonoran Trails, please fill out an open enrollment form for Desert Arroyo and return it to school ASAP. This does not mean you've committed to continue there but will reserve a place for you. I know many of you STMS folks need to decide if you can make the commute, etc. and also would like to know what the programming will be. I am working on that and will update you as soon as I have some solid answers. In the meantime, please return the form-- available here:

12/18/07 > Preschool Registration
Please contact Community Education at the Former Black Mountain School if you are a new or returning family for Preschool 2008. Registration is open until January 21, 2008.
12/13/07 > Moving Immersion to the Middle School
After much discussion of how to transition DWES's immersion program to the middle school as decision has been made and presented to the board. 5th graders will go to Desert Arroyo to continue with Spanish. It was necessary to put all graduating 5th graders at one middle school. There will be open enrollment forms going out early next week for those of you who are STMS families. Please open enroll for DAMS and I will be keeping you informed of how the programming and curriculum will look. That is the next step. Thank you all for being so supportive and paitent during this process. --Cristina
11/29/07 > 2nd grade Sombreros Podcast in Spanish
I worked with Nancy Pratt (district technology and instruction specialist) on how to do a podcast. I thought that having the 2nd grade Sombreros put together a list of phrases to help the parents that come volunteer in Sra. Arnieri's "store" would be helpful. The whole process was a learning experience for all of us and the kids just had a ball. Wait until you hear them. Their Spanish sounds amazing! Click HERE to go to Sra. Arnieri's website and stay tuned as I try to make my way to other classrooms.
11/19/07 > Immersion Teachers Attend NM Conference
Desert Willow's 5 Spanish immersion teachers attended the 12th Annual La Cosecha Conference on K-12 Dual Language education in New Mexico. Did you know NM is the only state in the country that has both English and Spanish as its official languages? The teachers attended sessions on innovative methods and programs while I  concentrated on middle and high school sessions. Teachers got to see lots of vendors with Spanish materials and I have started writing up orders. Part of the FLAP grant is to help our teachers find science, social studies and math materials in Spanish. This professional development opportunity as well as the substitutes needed were funded by the FLAP grant.
11/13/07 > Middle School Research
The bond and budget did not pass in the community so the imapct to our schools is being assessed. In the meantime, Cristina continued to research and talk with other middle schools across the country that have immersion continuation programs from the elementary levels. She shared articles, website, etc. and wrote up the viable options that are on the table to middle school at this time. All parties involved will be meeting within the next week or so to continue the discussion.

Cristina also finalized plans for teachers to attend a national dual language conference in New Mexico, spoke and toured interested parents about the language programs at DWES, observed and worked with the Spanish instructors delivering the FLEX model to K-1, to name a few things...
11/01/07 > Washington D.C. Trip for our Grant Director

Cristina attended the OELA Summit (Office of English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement and Academic Achievement for Limited English Proficient Students) in Washington D.C. on Monday and Tuesday of this week. OELA is an office in the U.S. Department of Education that focuses on:

  • Providing national leadership to help ensure that English language learners and immigrant students attain English proficiency and achieve academically and,

  • Assisting in building the nation's capacity in critical foreign languages

Our FLAP Grant addressed their second goal and was awarded through the OELA office. Cristina met with our program officer, Steve Van Pelt and gave him an update of the progress of the program. He is turn, shared how he prefers to communicate with his grantees, asked questions about our programs and answered questions from Cristina. It was a positive meeting and great PR to meet face to face with our officer.

10/22/07 > Grant Website Announced
The FLAP grant website is almost complete. You'll find information about second language opportunities at Desert Willow School, links to nationally known language websites, research articles and this running tab of grant activities. This is a dynamic site so if you have any feedback, please let Cristina Marchica know. Gracias!
10/12/07 > Middle School Immersion Update
This week Dr. Miller and Cristina Marchica gave Dr. Beazley and Mrs. Ann Orlando (CCUSD middle school principals) and Janine Marlow (Chair of the district's foreign language committee) a tour of the immersion program. They sat in at the 5th grade and peeked in at 2nd grade Spanish immersion classrooms. Afterwards, we all met to discuss the upcoming transition and several different options. No conlusive information to report. Cristina is going to get the options down on paper for the next step.
10/08/07 > Middle School Teachers Visit
Both Desert Arroyo and Sonoran Trails Middle Schools allowed their Spanish teacher to visit the DWES immersion program. The focus was to observe in the 5th grade Spanish immersion class that will roll into middle school next year.
10/01/07 > Language Training for Project Staff
The FLAP grant provided funds for language teachers to attend a 2-day workshop called TPR through Storytelling. TPR stands for Total Physical Response and is a strategy used by language teachers for students in the early stages of second language acquisition. The FLEX teachers (2), preschool and 2nd grade immersion teachers attended.

9/24/07 > The Grant Hires an External Evaluator
Our grant's external evaluator, Dr. Susan Barfield, is hired and visits for 2 days this week. She has over 16 years of experience in working with federally funded programs as an external evaluator. Her job is to make sure that DWES is using the grant funds as written in the grant, to provide feedback and suggestions for programmatic improvement, to assist with the technical reports due to OELA as well as to do the statistical analysis of our data.

Her focus for this visit was to leave with an overall understanding of how the district functions. She met with Dr. Burdick, Dr. Skot Beazley, Mrs. Janine Marlow, Dr. Miller, several immersion parents, and myself (Cristina). She observed in all the Spanish immersion classrooms (Spanish side only) as well as the aides delivering the FLEX model.
9/17/07 > Bilingual Aides Assist in Spanish Immersion Classrooms
In addition to delivering our FLEX model, Marilu and Maria also spend time in each Spanish immersion classroom to assist the teacher. In order to take advantage of their native Spanish speaking abilities, Maria and Marilu's time in those classrooms is devoted to working with students, not making copies or doing paperwork.
9/10/07 > Immersion Teacher Team Professional Discussions
Once a month, the English and Spanish immersion teacher teams meet with myself (Cristina) and Dr. Miller to discuss "school business" and to share teaching strategies that promote oral language production. One teacher is slotted to present his/her lesson monthly.

There are also weekly support meetings for each immersion teacher to discuss curriculum development and refinement. English immersion teachers meet with Mrs. Peterson and Spanish immersion teachers meet with Sra. Arnieri.
9/04/07 > Delivery of FLEX model begins
Paco and Pablo, our very own puppets are introduced as leading performers in our K-1 non-immersion FLEX classes. Students are excited, nervous, and motivated as they experience their first Spanish classes. Over the course of the next few weeks, students start to look forward to their Spanish classes and there is definately more Spanish being heard in the hallways as students try out their greetings, "hola amigo!"
8/20/07 > Two bilingual aides hired as per grant plan
We have secured two wonderful bilingual part-time aides to assist with achieving the goals of the grant. They will assist in the Spanish side of the immersion classrooms and will also deliver a Foreign Language Exposure (FLEX for short) model to the Kinder and 1st grade non-immersion classrooms.
8/13/07 > FLAP Offices Setup at DWES
We have been working hard to set up two offices in the back of the library will house the FLAP grant staff. Cristina Marchica (program director), Maria Mayuex (bilingual aide) and Marilu Lopez (bilingual aide) can be found there. Email is up and running with an office number of 480-650-5237.
8/06/07 > Program/Grant Director Hired
Cristina Marchica have been hired as the Spanish Immersion Program Director at Desert Willow School. She was an integral part of the grant writing team and has been in early language education for 16 years. She also has experience with directing federally funded projects.
