Research has shown that "good readers" utilize specific strategies that increase their understanding of text. These comprehension strategies help us engage with the text and enhance our enjoyment of reading.

"True comprehension goes beyond literal understanding and involves the reader's interaction with text. If students are to become thoughtful, insightful readers, they must extend their thinking beyond a superficial understanding of the text."

Each month the school will focus on one of these comprehension strategies. Although we use these strategies simultaneously as we read and each strategy may be discussed at other times during the school year, these will be the focus strategies for the months.
