Tips for Teaching with 6 Traits + 1 for Elementary

There are many ways to teach the 6 traits of writing. The most important thing is to take the time to explicitly teach the traits to all children. Children in the early grades can understand what makes good writing good. We model that all the time as we read picture books to the children and ask them about author's purpose, and their word choice, etc.

It is our job to take our time and make sure that our students understand the elements of good writing and we provide students with many opportunities to analyze writing in terms of the 6 traits, so that they can internalize that process. Below are some links to some especially important documents for our process, as well as some lesson plan ideas that you can use to teach the traits.

If you have a great lesson idea or tip that you would like to share here, just email it to npratt@ccusd93.org, and I will be sure to post it.

Keep checking back, as we are building this resource weekly with new ideas.

Double Trouble in Walla Walla, by Andrew Clements, illustrated by Sal Murdocca "Lulu disrupts a day in Walla-Walla by speaking in flip-flop chitter-chatter. Soon her teacher, the principal, and the school nurse are caught in this ibble-wobble word warp." (Horn Book) This is a great book for teaching the trait of "Word Choice" to your students. Fun and funny, your students will enjoy this lesson and learn the important points about word choice at the same time.
